Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a specific approach to the problem of pain based on sound physiological principles and neurological laws. NMT allows a reversal of the stress-tension-pain cycle.
By utilizing very specific and clinical myofascial and soft tissue manipulations, metabolic wastes are removed from the tissues involved. This allows the tense muscles to relax, thereby causing blood vessels to become less constricted and allowing the circulation to restore oxygen and nutritional supply to the tissues - enabling them to heal themselves. Nerve irritation, in turn, is reduced or eliminated, thereby easing or eliminating any pain.
Some of the terms associated with Neuromuscular Massage Therapy (NMT) are:
- Ischemia - lack of blood
- Trigger Points - ischemic soft tissues that, when stimulated, refer high neurological activity (pain, numbness) into other parts of the body; thus, creating secondary pain patterns.
- Nerve Compression - pressure on a nerve by an osseous (bone) or cartilaginous structure.
- Nerve Entrapment - pressure on a nerve by soft tissue such as muscle.
- Postural distortion - imbalance in the muscular tonus system resulting in movement of the body off the coronal and/or mid-saggital planes.
- Biomechanical dysfunction - imbalance in the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns.
